Big news from the big players in the eReader world (excluding the Nook, alas), including new Sony eReaders, lower prices for Borders eReaders and continued good press for Kindle 3. It does make you wonder what’s going on with Nook 2, although I will certainly concede that it’s better that BN take its time with N2 than rush out a second-gen product to cash in on the holiday season.

In the meantime, it is important to continue to improve and support the first-gen Nook, so let’s hope for a feature-filled update this month.

Those Were Those Other eReaders, Huh-huh-huh-huh:

The Chicago Sun Times asks, “iPad, Kindle, Nook or Sony? What Is the Best E-book Reader?”

EWeek talks about Sony’s revamped eReader offerings, which include the $179 Reader Pocket Edition, a $229 Touch Edition, and a $299 Daily Edition. (Read more at PC World or CNET.) I can only assume that Sony is attempting to cater to a higher-end crowd with the pricing offered, but I really can’t see the sense in pricing the lowest end edition at a rate higher than the Kindle or Nook.

The Kindle 3 reviews have been positive but by no means perfect. Check out USA Today, CNET and Engadget.

Not so much with the PanDigital Novel reviews.

Border lowered prices on its two hardware eReaders this week. The Kobo Reader now retails at $129.99 and the Aluratek Libre has hit the magical number of $99.99.

FreeBooks:

Salon Futura has launched its first issue in HTML and in ePub format during World Con. According to the Salon Futura website, “Salon Futura is a new online non-fiction magazine devoted to the discussion of science fiction, fantasy and related literature.” The first issue includes an interview with China Mieville, short fiction reviews and a number of SF-related essays.

In a bid to bring back memories of high school composition class, University of Chicago Press offers the First Edition of the Chicago Manual of Style as its September free eBook.

Barnes and Noble freeBooks two thrillers today–The Pawn by Steven James and (for today only) Hostile Intent by Michael Walsh.

This week’s round of public domain freeBooks from the BN mothership revolve around the theme, “Around the World in 5,792 Pages.” Authors include Chaucer, Kipling and Twain.

Barnes and Noble is soliciting input on next week’s final round of “Build Your Digital Library” books. Glance through the BN Classics, and suggest books that have not yet been included in the weekly BYDL offerings.

Lastly, if you’re looking for a new look for your Nook, JavoEdge is selling an denim book case for Nook.

Happy Labor Day weekend, and stay dry if you’re in Earl’s path.

This week, Barnes and Noble reported quarterly earnings (FY 2011 Q1). BN CEO William Lynch states, “Our digital strategy has clearly resonated with our customers as our Members – our best customers – with NOOK devices have increased their spending by approximately 20%. NOOK has also greatly expanded the Barnes & Noble customer base, with 25% of all NOOK customers new to BN.com.”

The Nook continues to drive business for BN.com. According to the report, “Barnes & Noble.com sales increased 42% as compared to the prior year to $145 million, with comparable sales increasing 53%.”

So, no matter what happens with the lawsuits and takeovers and corporate maneuvers, Nook and the digital store appears to be more than secure.

Additionally, Barnes and Noble announced that it has named Jamie Iannone President of Barnes & Noble Digital Products, which includes Nook and eBook sales.

On to the other items of interest for this week.

I’ve heard great things about Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games’ trilogy. Now that Mockingjay (Book 3) is out, I’m going to have to pick up and devour these. If you’d like to dress up your Nook with a Hunger Games theme, good news: Barnes and Noble offers free screensavers.

Barnes and Noble freeBooks J. A. According to the Unbound post, House of the Hunter “follows a cross-dressing convict who is hell bent on revenge.”

Visit and “Like” WOWIO’s Facebook page and receive a freeBook, Gord Zajac’s Major Karnage.

Synopsis:
It has been 20 years since The War, and Major John Karnage has finally settled into retirement: locked up in an insane asylum, with an explosive device embedded in the back of his neck to curb his violent tendencies.

Karnage and his troopers have been deemed unfit to live in normal society. Like a bit of old chewing gum stuck under a coffee table, the world has left The War and its scarred, unstable veterans behind. The military has been disbanded and World Peace has descended upon the Earth. Its inhabitants live happy, profitable lives under the global rule of the benevolent Dabney Corporation. All is tea and roses in this new, sanitized world . . . .

Until a terrifying threat from beyond the stars rears its squiggly head! An invading armada of aliens threatens to destroy the Earth, and it’s up to Major Karnage to stop them—as long as he doesn’t accidentally blow his own head off first.

Worried about the Barnes and Noble financials? Just want an update for your Nook? Forum Herder Michael-V gives a reassuring, general message, stating that “A NOOK software update with enhanced features will be launched in the coming months.”

That’s about as good as it gets in the Nookverse, as Barnes and Noble have been notoriously tight-lipped about Nook updates, in spite of pleas for more communication since the beginning of time. Or December.

Other items of interest from this past week:

BN released newly Nook-branded apps for the PC and for Apple gadgets.

Calibre v0.7.15 enhances multiple library support and tweaks the content server. The latest version also slays a number of bugs.

Download classic books grouped with a “Women Who Inspired Us” theme in this week’s “Build Your Digital Library” feature. Novelists include Hardy, James, Wharton and Woolf.

Engadget reports that Qualcomm is building a $2 billion Mirasol plant due to the impending demand by a major client. The Mirasol is a low-power, color display that received a lot of attention at CES this past January. Engadget speculates that Amazon is the client.

This week’s BN freeBook is Billy Boyle by James R. Benn.

Synopsis:
What’s a twenty-two-year-old Irish cop from Boston doing at Beardsley Hall having lunch with Haakon, King of Norway, and the rest of the Norwegian government in exile? Billy Boyle himself wonders. Back home, he’d just made detective (with a little help from family and friends) when war was declared. Unwilling to fight-and perhaps die-for England, he was relieved when his mother wangled a job for him on the staff of a general married to her distant cousin, Mamie. But the general turns out to be Dwight D. Eisenhower; his headquarters are in London, which is undergoing the Blitz; and Uncle Ike has a special assignment for Billy: He wants Billy to be his personal investigator.

Operation Jupiter, the impending invasion of Norway, is being planned. Billy is to catch a spy amongst the Norwegians. He doubts his own abilities, and a theft and two murders test his investigative powers. But to his own surprise, Billy proves to be a better detective than anyone suspected.

There’s lots going on this week, so I’ve decided to update early. I will obviously have to update tomorrow with links to freebies.

The NY Times reports that the Barnes and Noble board just can’t get along and that settlement talks have collapsed. I can’t say I’m really up on the BN board and am not sure how the two principal parties involved might impact the Nook, eBooks or brick-and-mortar stores. Still, it points to the on-going brouhaha at the mothership.

Not content to just give a quick update in the biz section, the Times also features an article titled As E-Books Gain, Barnes and Noble Tries to Stay Ahead.” The article touches on the current board chaos and the impact of increasing digital sales over foot traffic in brick-and-mortar locations. It seems to me that the destruction or thinning of the big chains might (ironically) make indie bookstores more feasible in the future, as there will continue to be demand for Dead Tree Books, including new releases, used and rare.

In other eReader news, Plastic Logic has killed the once hot and the now outdated QUE Reader, and Notion Ink has pushed back the release of their snazzy tablet, the Adam, to a nebulous date but has issued pricing information ($498 for Pixel Qi and 3G, $399 for WiFi and a vanilla LCD). The Adam looks so promising, it would be a shame to not see it released.

In totally frickin’ HUGE news, get free CHOCOLATE while supplies last at your local Barnes and Noble. According to the Nook Facebook page, “Now, for a limited time, show your NOOK at your local B&N’s café and get a free 3-piece Box of Godiva chocolate “Gems.” (If your B&N doesn’t have a café, you can redeem at the checkout area.)” Enjoy!

Barnes and Noble bundles “tear jerkers” for this week’s round of free public domain classics. Beef up your digital library with novels by Crane, Fitzgerald, Hugo and Wharton.

Are you a big fan of Paranormal Romance? If so, you’ll be pleased to see a return to the PR genre for this week’s Free Friday selection, Marked by Elisabeth Naughton.

Synopsis:

To stave off a war with the Underworld and protect his people from extinction, Theron-descendant of Hercules-has to find the woman who fulfills an ancient prophesy. Only how can he turn her over for sacrifice when losing her would mean losing his heart?

That’s it for this week. Have a happy and safe weekend!

As of now, the company is currently committeeing up and exploring “strategic alternatives.” It does not appear that the ominous Special Committee will have any near-future effects.

In another case of let’s get the rest of the ugly out of the way first, Smart Bitches, Trashy Books reports (thanks, Teleread) on another big customer service kerfuffle. Since the early days of Nook, there have been customer service issues, and it is disappointing to see this problem continue. According to SBTB, Jennifer Mikels’ Rich, Rugged. . . Ruthless is masquerading as Anne Stuart’s Ruthless, Barnes and Noble are aware of the problem and they require the customer to call them for a refund or to stand by for a real copy of Ruthless to appear in the store.

This really isn’t acceptable at all, and Barnes and Noble should have learned from the December and January debacles. While the company seems to have improved in customer service matters, they still have a long way to go if they want to compete (and BN does want to compete, as that’s their business).

On to happier news:

BN released the More In Store schedule for August. Highlights include a new short story by Kelley Armstrong, as well as interviews, essays and reviews.

The Right Book for the Beginning Reader by Patricia Reilly Giff
Bestselling children’s book author Patricia Reilly Giff writes, from her own experience, about what makes the best kind of book for children who are just starting to read on their own.

•August 29
Anything is Possible: A Chat with Kresley Cole
The settings for Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark series run the gamut from New Orleans to the Scottish Highlands. In this exclusive essay for Barnes & Noble, Cole reveals how she chooses the settings and why escapism isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Allowance Negotiation by Jean Chatzky
Teaching children about money is important, but not always easy. Just for NOOK owners, money coach Jean Chatzky shares tips on how to talk to your kids about finances.

The big news this week is outside of the Nookverse itself. How does the release of the Kindle 3 impact Barnes and Noble’s plans for future Nooks? Will Barnes and Noble offer just a step-up or a major revision when it releases the next-gen Nook? It’s going to be an interesting holiday season this year.

NY Times reports that Barnes and Noble will be expanding its Nook areas in their brick-and-mortar stores by incorporating 1,000-square feet demo boutiques with sample Nooks, Nook-trained employees and Nook-related videos. Don’t look for your local Nook Wonderland until September. (I’ve included the press release at the end of the post for those of you who want to dig through the marketing officialese.

The Calibre team issued 0.7.12 and 0.7.11 yesterday. The newest version of the eBook manager software adds support for new phones, including the Droid X, and fixes a number of bugs.

Barnes and Noble’s official Free Friday offering is A Nail Through the Heart by Timothy Hallinan. This is the first book in a series that features Poke Rafferty.

Synopsis:

Travel writer Poke Rafferty was good at looking for trouble-so good that he made a little money writing a few offbeat travel guides for the young and terminally bored. But that was before Bangkok stole his heart. Now the expat American is happily playing family with Rose, the former go-go dancer he wants to marry, and with Miaow, the wary street child he wants to adopt. Yet just when everything is beginning to work out, trouble comes looking for Poke in the guise of good intentions. First he takes in Miaow’s friend, a troubled and terrifying street urchin named Superman. Then he agrees to find a distraught Aussie woman’s missing uncle-and accept an old woman’s generous payment to find a blackmailing theif. Soon, these three seemingly disparate events begin to overlap, pulling Poke deeper into dark, unfamiliar terrain. Gradually he realizes that he’s been gliding across the surface of a culture he really doesn’t understand-and that what he doesn’t know is about to hurt him and everyone he loves.

Beautifully crafted, relentlessly paced, A Nail Through the Heart is an exciting and enticing read that will leave readers hungry for more from the gifted Timothy Hallinan.

That wraps up the week. Happy reading!

Press release:

Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the world’s largest bookseller, today announced that the company is expanding its in-store NOOK displays to full-service eReading NOOK Boutiques to accommodate this rapidly growing segment of Barnes & Noble’s business. Among Members – Barnes & Noble’s very best customers – the company has seen an approximately 20 percent increase in their combined digital and physical spend since purchasing a NOOK and over a 70 percent increase on a unit basis. The widespread appeal of Barnes & Noble’s NOOK devices and free and popular eReading software has also triggered significant expansion of Barnes & Noble’s customer base, with 25 percent of NOOK users new to BN.com.
“We entered the eBook market a year ago confident our bookstores would be a huge competitive asset, and a year later, the role of our retail channel in the success of NOOK and eBooks, and the popularity of our in-store eReading features have crystallized this advantage,” said William J. Lynch, CEO of Barnes & Noble. “No other company is doing what Barnes & Noble is doing, utilizing its store footprint and innovative technology to add value to the customer’s eReading experience – including unique features such as digital eBook lending, free Wi-Fi connectivity, in-store browsing of complete eBooks and exclusive content, and more.”

Lynch added, “The NOOK Boutique concept was designed to ensure we’re maximizing the growth potential for all channels through our bookstores, which will continue to focus on delivering customers the joy, discovery and exploration of reading in a comfortable, community setting. Our growing leadership in technology and digital content is simply deepening the experience.”

The 1,000 square-foot boutiques will feature demonstration tables and multiple operating NOOK devices for trial. An adjoining wall and large flat panel display will feature video demos of NOOK eBook Readers and display more than 100 accessories, including NOOK covers by popular designers such as kate spade new york, Jack Spade, Jonathan Adler and Lilly Pulitzer.
Synopsis:

This daughter of a rock star has it all—until murder crashes her world. During a concert, sixteen-year-old Shaley O’Connor stumbles upon the body of a friend backstage. Where is God at a time like this? Can she find out who the killer is before he strikes again?

Synopsis:

Venice, 1740.

Desperate, starving, Kathleen Strong makes her way to a job interview that promises a chance at proper employment…and maybe a bite to eat. Accused of “gross immorality,” she’s adrift after being dismissed from her governess position, despite being entirely innocent.

That innocence is precisely what a mysterious group of debauched aristocrats finds so alluring about Miss Strong. When they propose a scandalous offer that she can’t refuse…she can’t refuse. But if the darkly gallant Alistair Rohan, a gentleman involved in all manner of wicked deeds himself, has anything to say about it, Kathleen can escape her disrepute in another way.

Of course, the escape route looks very similar to the group’s illicit proposition itself…
