Friday Five: Five Sources of Custom Screensavers and Wallpapers

Getting tired of the same wallpapers and screensavers that shipped with your nook? nook allows you to side-load (connect your USB cable to your nook and computer) images into your “mywallpapers” and “myscreensavers” folders and to select your custom images via the “Settings” menu. Note that you must upload images to those two folders. You must copy images onto your nook’s internal memory. Images on your microSD card will not work.

1. nook Wallpapers at Flickr: This is an open Flickr group, which means you can share your favorite nook wallpapers with other nook owners via your Flickr account.

2. Threads at the Barnes and Noble eBook Help board: The official board can get crowded with frozen nook and battery charge threads, but you can occasionally find gems such as the custom wallpaper thread and the dragon screensaver thread.

3. nook-look.com: nook-look.com offers wallpapers and screensavers in a variety of different categories, including nature, romance, and science fiction. You’ll need to register an account to upload images, but any visitor can download a file.

4. Exstatica: Exstatica only has one screensaver right now, but it’s pretty nifty. Exstatica’s authors pack features gray-scaled pictures of nineteen writers and philosophers bundled with quotes.

5. Deviant Art: While Deviant Art isn’t a nook-specific site, it’s been around for almost ten years now and offers a vast repository of art. (If you don’t see a “Download” button, you won’t be able to use the image.) You can choose to browse categories, view the most popular images, and turn on/off the mature filter. Deviant Art also offers a Stock Art section.

Due to the range of image sizes, you will have to resize and modify most Deviant Art images by using an image editor, so consider this an option for more advanced users.
