Barnes and Noble has updated the nook Support page with the v1.2 update, which totals 62.7 MB. You can now download it to your computer, connect your nook to your computer via USB, then side-load the content into nook’s root directory.
In order to side-load, make sure your battery level is at least at 20 percent, and as always, make sure you eject and properly remove nook before unplugging it from your computer.
[Updated:] How to Manually Update nook to v1.2. This is skewed towards Windows, since that’s my primary OS:
1. Download the “signed_bravo_update.dat” file to a easy-to-remember location on your computer, such as your desktop.
2. Interface your nook with your computer via your USB cable.
4. Close your file manager.
5. Eject your nook, then use “Safely Remove Hardware.” (Both options are available via “Computer” or “My Computer” in Windows Vista/7 and Windows XP, respectively.)
6. Remove your nook from the computer. Allow your nook opportunity to detect and to process the update. Do not turn off your nook while nook updates. You should see a progress bar in the LCD screen.
7. nook will restart. Do not prod or poke your nook at this time. This took a minute or two on my nook, so be patient.
8. Your nook’s updated. Enjoy!

I just did the upload and now my library won’t open up. Nothing, no BN content, none of my stuff. I’m going to play with it for a little while. If I can’t get anything I’m going to reset it and see if that helps.
I’m really sorry to hear that, Frank. I’m sure you probably have tried shutting down and restarting, but if not, I’d recommend giving it a try. You could also try to reapply the update by connecting and dropping and dragging again. Perhaps it didn’t correctly patch the first time. That does happen with machines. Let us know how it goes, and good luck.
my computer doesn’t seem happy with the .dat file extension. where can i download something free for that? it keeps referring me to filehelper, which isn’t free.
Hi, Laura. You don’t actually open the file on your computer. Just drop and drag the .dat file into your nook’s root directory (not into any of the sub-folders), eject/safely remove, then give your nook a few minutes to process the update.
Thank you for the explanation of the root directory! Can I remove the dat file after the update is complete?
Hi, Jayna. My nook automatically assimilated the file; it’s no longer showing in my root directory. I would suspect that’s typical behavior for nook, but take a look at your root and see if the .dat file is still there. If it is, I see no reason why you shouldn’t be able to remove it post-update.
Hi, Beth ~ I tried the manual download twice, following all steps and leaving and it alone for an hour with no result: my nook just didn’t seem to see the file there. I finally turned airplane mode off to check for new content via my home wi-fi (no 3G where I live), and a little window showed up at the base of the B&N Library screen saying, “Downloading update” with a progressing % next to it. I’m hoping this will work. Will keep you posted!
It worked! The .dat file still shows in my root, so, I’m assuming that the update actually occurred via the wi-fi connection. I’m going to leave it there until the next time I charge, just to see if it disappears on its own. My screen went dark when the download was done. Then it turned back on and verified the update. Whole thing took about 12 minutes, including the update via our brdbnd connection. The update is very nice! I like being able to rate the books, and sort different ways.
Sarah, glad that you were able to update via WiFi. No idea why the manual didn’t update, but at this point, it only matters that you’re enjoying v1.2!
The sorting is a definite big-huge plus, and BN dealt with some big issues such as the registration. I haven’t rated any books yet, but I have far more books in My Documents than in my BN Library.
