nook Connectivity FAQ

The nook Connectivity FAQ addresses questions you might have regarding nook’s wireless connections (3G and wifi).

I’m connected to my home wireless network, and I can’t register my nook!
If you’re having problems connecting with your home WiFi and have AT&T service in your area (not an AT&T partner service but true AT&T 2, 2.5, or 3G), use nook’s AT&T radio and not your home WiFi to register. Once you’ve registered nook, you may then use your wireless network to browse and download eBooks.

Do I have to pay for access to AT&T Wireless’ 3G network? No.

How do I know if I am located within AT&T Wireless’ coverage area? Take a gander at the AT&T coverage map. The coverage area map does not indicate signal strength or how many users use your local cell tower, which can impact your service. The only way to be absolutely sure is to test an AT&T wireless air card or cell phone at your home location.

I can connect to AT&T Wireless’ 2G network. Can I use it to connect to register or to download eBooks? Nook is compatible with either 2G or 3G service. As long as you receive a signal, you’ll be able to download eBooks, albeit at slower speeds.

How does wireless work? Nook connects to any available wireless network. In fact, it will connect to an established wifi connection by default.

I have security implemented on my wifi router. Can I connect nook to my wireless network? Yes, as long as the network does not require you to log into a web browser form. If the network features security, such as WPA, you’ll need to know and to enter the encryption key to connect.

The low battery warning just appeared! This WiFi/3G is killing my battery! What should I do? Turn on “Airplane Mode” by tapping “Settings” from the Home Menu, then “On.” (Turning on Airplane Mode disables the internal radios or turns them off.) You can return here to turn off Airplane Mode and to re-enable the radio after you’ve charged your battery or when you need to use the WiFi/3G. nook will display a small airplane icon when Airplane Mode is on.
