nook Troubleshooting FAQ

In a perfect world, technology would never need troubleshooting on our part. Unfortunately, not even the nookverse is perfect, so we know you might have problems after you open your shiny new nook. We’ve put together a nook Troubleshooting FAQ to help you with some of the more common issues and questions. Problems that have been widely corrected have been struck out but retained in case a few folks continue to experience those problems.

I can’t connect to my wireless network after applying the v1.3 update. What can I do to access my WiFi? The official nook board’s “Rav_Bunneh” provides a solution that involves renaming your router’s identification name or SSID, rebooting it and connecting with your nook. Other posters have recommended ensuring that your password meets the minimum number of characters.

How do I get new updates?
Barnes and Noble offers a manual upgrade and an Over The Air (OTA) option. While the v1.2 update was available over the 3G network, the v1.3 update is only available for download over a wireless network.

The manual updating process is fairly simple, as you need only download the update, connect your nook to your computer, drop the update file directly into the nook’s root or primary folder, eject your nook and allow nook to patch itself.

My nook is frozen/dead, and I can’t access nook’s User Guide. Barnes and Noble’s nook User Guide has some great info in it, and Barnes and Noble updates it with each new release. You can download it from Barnes and Noble’s nook Support page.

My nook is frozen. It won’t come out of “Sleep Mode.” My nook has been formatting this eBook for eons. It is likely that your nook’s battery is dead. Before proceeding, attempt to power down nook by pressing the power button down for 20 seconds.

If nook’s plugged into the power adapter or your computer, unplug it. Power down the power button for at least five seconds to turn it off. Then, remove the battery by pulling off the back cover and unscrewing the single screw that secures nook’s battery. Remove the battery, and place the screw in a secure area. Connect nook to the power adapter, and allow it to reboot. Then, reinsert the battery and allow it to recharge.


Every time I shut down my nook, my eReader loses its bookmarks and forgets about the last page read. What’s going on, and how do I fix this?

My nook’s clock is wrong. How do I manually set the time?
Unfortunately, you cannot currently manually set nook’s time. Connect with nook’s on-board 3G to sync your nook’s clock with the correct time.

How can I perform a “hard reboot?” Hold down the power button for 10-15 seconds. Release it, then press the power button again to restart nook.

I just received my nook, and it won’t charge. What should I do?
First, remove nook’s backing and expose the battery. Make sure the battery is properly seated and is secure. Replace the cover and try to charge nook again.

What if my nook still won’t charge? Contact Barnes and Noble’s tech support line at 1-800-THE-BOOK (1-800-843-2665).

I’d like to upload a file to my nook. Will nook support it?
Nook supports the following document formats: ePub, PDF, PDB, and PDF reflow.
Nook supports the following music formats: MP3.
Nook supports the following image formats: JPG, PNG, GIF, or PMB.
