Whether an expat abroad, a military member serving outside of the United States, or a non-US citizen, you may have questions about nook, nook availability, and eBook purchases outside of the US.
Can I purchase nook outside of the United States? Not as of December 2009.
Can I purchase eBooks from nook’s integrated Barnes and Noble store outside of the United States? As of December 2009, you may only purchase eBooks with your nook device in the United States and Canada. (You cannot purchase nook in Canada, however.)
Is there any way around the international eBook purchase problem? You can choose to give your account details to a trusted friend or family member who still resides in the United States. (This method will also work if you have more than one nook on the same account. When sharing an account, you also share credit card information.) The friend can purchase eBooks from the Barnes and Noble website, and you can download the eBooks via wifi when abroad.
Can I purchase eBooks from other vendors and upload them to my nook when I’m abroad? As long as the file format is compatible with nook, you may. Compatible document formats are ePub, PDF, PDB, and PDF reflow. (Please note that DRM–digital rights management–protection schemes may not allow you to view eBooks on your nook. Always check the eBook vendor’s compatibility list, and try to purchase non-DRM-protected files.)
